AHH the good old urban myth. They’re always gripping, always disturbing and they always end with the words “it happened to a friend of my cousin’s mate’s mate – so it’s definitely true.”
But every now and again there’s a kernel of truth to the story, as is the case this week with the tale of … The Phone of Death!
A phone company in Bulgaria have discontinued the number 0888 888 888 after three people who owned the number all died.
The first bloke to get “The Curse” was Vladimir Grashnov – the former CEO of the phone company, Mobitel, that issued the number. Vlad died of cancer in 2001, aged 48.
Next on the chopping block was Bulgarian mafia boss Konstantin Dimitrov – who was gunned down in 2003 at the age of 31 by a lone assassin in Holland while he was dining with a model. He apparently had the mobile with him when he died…
And the latest to be struck by… *puts on sinister voice* The Phone of Death!… is estate agent turned huge cocaine trafficker Konstantin Dishliev – who was also gunned down in a restaurant in Sofia in 2005.
The number’s been dormant since then, as police looked into the murder, but it’s available again now and Mobitel are reported to have suspended it for good. Callers now just get a recorded message saying the phone is ‘outside network coverage.’
That’s because its network burns in the fires of Hades!
