When Aftab Mughal (21) needed some advice, he went to Terence Williams (51) who gave him the sound age old advice that they needed to get naked, dance and almost burn down the building that they were in.
As part of a Wiccan ceremony, the men from The Meadows, Nottingham lit newspapers in order to burn away ‘negative vibes’.
When a neighbour saw smoke pouring from the property he climbed on to his roof only to see the strange ritual inside. After trying and failing to get their attention by knocking at their window, he dialled for the emergency services and told how he saw the flames licking up around their ankles.
Firefighters came to their rescue, and removed them from the building after they tried to run away and complete their ritual. The men still refused to cover themselves up when they were given blankets outside, surprised that anyone had come for them at all. The men were presented with more negative vibes when they were arrested and charged with arson.
Williams described the ceremony as a Wiccan ceremony, designed to cleanse their souls and believed he had everything under control. Mughal from Bestwood Park, Nottingham a former biotechnology student said he was simply following instructions.
Nottingham Crown Court heard the pair had been burning white sage leaves and a candle as they meditated and that Terence Williams suggested both their clothes should be burnt to enhance the ritual they were undertaking.
The court learned that there had been three different fires in the flat and that there were two gas canisters in a cupboard, which were a potential threat had the fire grown further.
Both men pleaded guilty to arson and the judge, Recorder Jason MacAdam, told them “this fire was caused through stupidity rather than malice.”
He gave each man a 12-month community order, with 120 hours of unpaid work.
