united-city-manchesterDavid Moyes is probably waking up this morning hoping yesterday’s 4-1 mauling by Manchester City was just a bad dream. Unfortunately for him and the red half of Manchester, his worst nightmares were realised in his first derby game in charge.

United had their pants well and truly pulled down by City who dominated from start to finish in Sunday’s encounter. First half goals from Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure were nothing more than City deserved and within two minutes of the restart Aguero had another before Samir Nasri made it 4-0 on the 50 minute mark. Few could have blamed City manager Pellegrini, also taking charge of his first Manchester derby, if he had kicked off his shoes at this point and put his feet up before lighting a victory cigar such was the gulf in class.

For a every impressive City performer there was an equally woeful United display. Ashley Young continued to show the strength of a malnourished seven year old, while Jesus Navas and Aleksander Kolorov bullied the United full backs so much it was painful to watch at times. I wouldn’t be surprised if Danny Welbeck was still trying to find his way out of Vincent Kompany’s back pocket as we speak.

For United, who had left Van Persie in the stands nursing an injury, the only player to come of the pitch with any sort of respect intact was Wayne Rooney, and that is a fairly impressive effort considering he was running round for 90 minutes with what seemed to be a giant 1980’s sweatband wrapped around his head. His goal, a brilliant free-kick in the closing minutes, will be little consolation for United fans who can prepare themselves for a long week of abuse from their City counterparts.

The result will bring further pressure on Moyes in the post-Fergie era while, for City’s new manager there are few better ways to win over the supporters than embarrassing your bitter rivals.
