Just another piece of evidence that the people in charge of the music industry nowadays actually have no interest in music whatsoever.
Bruce Springsteen (62) played Hard Rock Calling at Hyde Park and invited guest rock legend Paul McCartney (of The Beatles – if you’ve heard of them) on stage to jam and perform some more hits together. Truly a feast of the senses for any fan of real music.
Springsteen is notorious for playing longer gigs than he is booked for – which if you’re a ticket buyer means extra value for money. Apparently, if you’re a gig organiser though, it’s a huge hassle and it becomes your duty to be that grumpy guy who asks the cool kids to turn their music down or off. Everyone hates that guy.
The Boss and Macca were meant to finish up around 10.30 in time for an 11pm noise curfew. At around 10.55pm, some killjoy decided to turn the sound off and refuse the rock heroes a chance to say their goodbyes to the crowd and thanks to their fellow musicians.
This obviously sparked a lot of rage from fans. Comedian Stephen Merchant said he was ashamed to be British while Simon Pegg demanded to know “what joyless, bitter killjoy made that decision?”. Even Mayor Boris Johnson disagreed with the decision saying “If they’d have called me, my answer would have been for them to jam on in the name of the Lord”.
Defence comes in the form of people saying that the music fans should think about the residents in the area who want to go to bed, but I’m yet to hear an actual complaint from a Hyde Park neighbour.
One of the top dogs at the Ministry of Sound had the gall to say that these aging rockers should give it a rest and this sort of fuss would never have been made for an underground dubsteb or drum ‘n’ bass gig. To that I say, ‘stop being an idiot, drum ‘n’ bass is rubbish’.
Springsteen and McCartney may have not had any hits since their golden eras, but at that time they cemented themselves as the legends they are today. Fashion might have changed, but good taste hasn’t (they are different things).
Since this whole mess, Bryan Ferry (of Roxy Music) has made a call to all rockers to abandon playing at Hyde Park. Keeping the noise down and going to bed at 10.30 is not the rock ‘n’ roll way.
