Mario Balotelli can be the good, the bad and the ugly when he wants to. If he had a career as good as Clint Eastwood then when hes 70 he will still be scoring goals like he did against Germany. But tonight he was the good as his double secured Italy a place in the final with a 2-1 win over the Germans. Super Mario gave them the lead with a point blank header past keeper Manuel Neuer, before smashing home a second later on in the first half. Mesut Ozil’s injury time penalty gave Germany a slight bit of hope, but it was super Mario and his pets that advanced emphatically into the final to set up a tantalising encounter with Spain.
Once again it was Andrea Pirlo who dictated the game, with the Germans using Toni Kroos to counter his threat, but his threat was still ongoing. Germany still dominated possession and shots on goal, but the clinical and ruthless Italians learnt from their recent political ongoings and defeated Germany to give them a first trophy since 2006, when a similar controversy marred that team but did not stop them from winning the world cup.
Can super Mario lift his team to the league of Mario Kart? We will see.
