More than 50 dogs took part in the seventh annual surfing competition in California yesterday.
The Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition was held in San Diego and helps to raise money for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The canines take part in 10-minute heats and are scored on their best two waves. The heats are divided into three categories: small dogs, large dogs, and tandem dogs. The judges also award prizes to the best long wave ride and the best-dressed pup.
One of the judges, Teevan McManus, told Sky News: “So what we’re looking for could be length of ride, maybe that little bit of extra flair that a dog has, from the way they’re dressed up to, maybe some sunglasses. Whatever it might be, we’re always looking for something that stands out.”
The winners in the small dog category were Michael Uy and Abbie Girl, his Australian Kelpie. Mr Uy won a holiday package, while Abbie Girl was awarded with snacks.
Mr Uy said: “You know actually this year I was injured so a little bit of an underdog coming in but we do this because we love surfing together in the water.”
