Mohammad Ashan, a mid-level Taliban commander in east Afghanistan, who is suspected of plotting attacks on Afghan security forces, thought he could fiddle the officials out of a few bucks.
He walked up to a police checkpoint, pointed to the wanted poster featuring his face, and asked for the $100 finder’s fee noted on the poster.
“We asked him, ‘Is this you?'” said Specialist Matthew Baker “Mohammad Ashan answered with an incredible amount of enthusiasm, ‘Yes, yes, that’s me! Can I get my award now?'”
Of course, the police did not hand over the reward money and promptly arrested him instead.
Officials were not convinced that a Taliban commander could be so utterly stupid so they took a biometric scan and were shocked to find that the man was indeed who he said he was.
He has since become the butt of police jokes, being called “the Taliban equivalent of the ‘Home Alone’ burglars,” while another official has been quoted as simply saying, “Clearly, this man is an imbecile.”
