Move over Bend it Like Beckham, take a hike Escape to Victory and Fever Pitch, because we’re soon to be blessed with the greatest football story ever told – Jermaine Pennant: the Movie.
Apparently the former Liverpool midfielder has agreed a deal to have a movie made about his life called “From the Streets” charting his miraculous rise from promising 15-year-old at non-league minnows Arsenal, to the dizzy heights of international glory at global mega-club Tampines Rovers, who he currently plays for in Singapore. What a film it promises to be. The big challenge for the director will be trying to squeeze in so many highlights from such a miraculous career. You could make a trilogy just about his time at Stoke.
“We were working on a football project about a kid from the inner city that signs for a big club etc but when we heard Pennant’s story and read excerpts from his book we were all blown away,” said Sheridan Demyers, the film producer of ‘Running Films’. “His story is incredible, unbelievable in fact. The movie is currently in pre-production and we will start filming in the summer.”
The film will be based on Pennant’s rise to fame, his misdemeanours and his footballing achievements once he has finished writing his autobiography – ‘My Crazy Football Life’. Will the story of a gifted footballer wasting his talent to become a Premier League journeyman prove a bigger hit than Star Wars: The Force Awakens? Only time will tell. But if they really want to bring in the punters, why not try Lust for Mediocrity: The Steve Claridge Story.
