Here we are again, the Six Nations is set to begin this weekend and there are wounds that are set to be healed, prides looking to be restored and the potential of Wales setting a record titles won in a row.
The Welsh start their defence against Italy who are a team who are not expected to demonstrate any amazing displays this year; needless to say that’s the case every year. However, upsets are always on the cards as the Italians proved last year with their opening victory over France.
The Italians have won a grand total of 11 games from the 70 that they have played since their inclusion in 2000, leading them to ‘win’ 9 Wooden Spoons in the process. Congrats to them! Their display last year, with them finishing fourth was a big surprise and the chances of that being repeated are slim. Shockingly taking a big win against Ireland as well as the first day win against France, you may be lead to think that Italy have a chance.
Italy coach, Jacques Brunel will be having selection headaches with a long list of injured experienced players. Brunel is going to be forced to select from the very inexperienced
Unlike the girls on a night out in Newport, Wales head coach Warren Gatland has everyone fit causing him a different type of selection headache compared to that of Brunel.
After two months out with a shoulder injury, Welsh captain Sam Warburton has been declared fit but, named on the bench for the game against Italy.
“This is the hardest team we’ve picked for a long time, whether it’s the starting XV or the bench.” Gatland boasted, as he made a slight start with the mind games for this year’s tournament. Mind games or not, Gatland should really have the confidence in his squad of players to set a bench mark against the lowly Italians.
