Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Album and Film: 4/5
MOVE over Doom and Max Payne, this is a real video game movie, laced with hilarious and witty nods toward the classic video game cliches – from the 8-bit Universal logo, to the clever use of coins and bonus lives.
The biggest compliment I can give the film is that the 20+ major and supporting characters receive their time to shine, and never once does a character feel out of place or underdeveloped. It’s one of the best films this year and a must-see for young and old.
One of the key reasons for the film’s high quality is the fantastic music and score, and the soundtrack does not disappoint.
The Beck-penned tunes from Pilgrim’s fictional band, Sex Bo-Omb, are the real highlight with “Garbage Truck” on heavy rotation in the BBM offices. Metric’s “Black Sheep” is infectous and like the whole album, brilliantly fits the context of the film. Add them to classic T-Rex and Rolling Sones tracks and you have one of the best film soundtracks ever released. Yep, we went there.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is in cinemas and record stores right now.
