Sir Alex Ferguson is a man that truly embodies the “Prize Prick” award. He is one of the greatest coaches of all time but off the field he is a prick and his recently released autobiography confirms the diagnosis.
Sir Alex has sought to burn all bridges with the highly quotable book. Of course he has fired shots at Liverpool F.C.; the club he made his mission to knock off their perch. But he has even levelled criticisms at his former players, the ones who brought him success and made him the well respected coach he is today.
Some of his claims are farcical to say the least and it is clear he only looking to ramp up sales. He has claimed he doesn’t believe England captain Steven Gerrard to be a “top, top, player” despite trying on more than one occasion to sign the midfielder. Maybe that’s the reason; at 14 years old Gerrard turned Sir Alex down and in 2005 he again resisted the Scotsman’s overtures.
Roy Keane, Sir Alex’s captain and the man he helped United create a fear factor for the opposition came under fire. The Scotsman claims Keane had a ‘vicious tongue’ and there was a point that came where he had to be let go because it was damaging the team. This led to Keane blasting Sir Alex for a not knowing what loyalty means. David Beckham and Wayne Rooney weren’t spared either. Sir Alex criticised Becks for looking to be famous and Rooney is apparently a ‘slow learner’.
Even Joey Barton, who has the biggest mouth in football, thought Sir Alex was ‘making a right mug of himself’. Indeed Sir Alex Ferguson doesn’t really need to feed gossip columns just to sell a few books for more money. Over 25 years of top level football management, he could surely give us a greater insight into the game than a tiffs with his former players.
