england thumbEngland RFU revealed their new alternate kit yesterday at a fancy event in Twickenham.

According to the customary marketing bollocks the new kit, set to be worn for the first time in England’s autumn series, is “inspired by the iconic Battle of the Roses Yorkshire versus Lancashire painting” which adorns the wall of the President’s suite at Twickenham. We actually quite like the design even if some fans have likened it to a Victorian deckchair.

The only problem is that it is white and red. Now this leads us to question whether kit manufacturers Canterbury are aware of the current England home kit (or any England kits throughout history) but in case they hadn’t had a chance to check them out they are…white and red.

This poses a problem. Now isn’t an alternate kit supposed to be worn when the opposition colours clash with your own? This isn’t exactly possible if BOTH KITS ARE THE SAME COLOURS. Granted there is a lot more red on the away kit but still there are plenty of other colours available to choose from.

Having said that, after basically producing an exact replica of an All Blacks kit during a 2011 World Cup game against New Zealand and forcing the likes of Jonny Wilkinson and Danny Care to play in a WKD shade of purple against Argentina in 2009 maybe England are trying to steer clear of causing too much controversy with this one.

It is all pretty irrelevant anyway as it will probably only be worn in about two games before a new creation appears to replace it; our money is on a 90’s rave edition next.
