England took a step closer to the World Cup in Brazil over the weekend with a flattering 4-1 scoreline over Montenegro. For most of the first half England were reduced to half chances with the only bright spark coming from débutante Andros Townsend. Against minor opposition such as the Montenegrins who are more likely to drop deep and look to capitalise on the counter, creativity is a must and that was in severe shortage as they stifled England’s attack.
Much of this is down to the choice of personnel made by Roy Hodgson. Although he is a striker, starting Danny Welbeck can be seen as defensive as the robust Man Utd striker can provide cover for Leighton Baines going forward and doesn’t possess the explosive skill a winger should. England were finally able to break the deadlock after the break with a scrappy goal as Wayne Rooney pounced on a fumble from the goalie from a Danny Welbeck daisy cutter.
The second resulted from a break down the left as Welbeck cut back a cross for Daniel Sturridge who initially put him through, but he was beaten to it Boskovic who sliced the clearance into the back of his own net. The Montenegrins did manage to pull one back to put uncertainty back into the minds of the England team as an ambitious shot from Fatos Beciraj was turned in by Damjanovic. But a 25 yard drive from the Townsend sealed the points and an impressive debut. Daniel Sturridge managed to keep up his impressive goal scoring form by adding a penalty in injury time after being felled by Kecojevic.
The result leaves England with their fate still in their hands but surely nothing more than a win will against Poland as the Ukrainians face San Marino who have not even registered a point in this qualifying campaign.
