fernandoTorresChelsea took on Manchester City this weekend at Stamford Bridge in what was billed as a clash between the two champions-elect. Indeed on paper and given the pedigree of both sides they should be the ones to come out on top, especially since current champions Manchester United continue to struggle under David Moyes.

Of all people to set the game alight, it was the much maligned Fernando Torres who took all the plaudits. Although he still made time to show the side of him that has been roundly criticised by the media since his move. He somehow managed to miss a guilt edged chance one on one in the first half.

Manchester City had much of the possession but it was Chelsea who the better of the chances. Torres, seemingly unfazed by his earlier miss, rattled the crossbar with an ambitious effort on the edge of the box. He soon made amends for his miss earlier by breezing past Gael Clichy down the right hand side and crossing for Andre Schurrle to tap in the opening goal. The scoreline was hardly surprising one for the performance and second the fact Mourinho is yet to be beaten at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea manager.

Second half City managed to up their game and found an early breakthrough as Sergio Aguero unleashed a powerful left footed drive into the top left corner from the edge of the box. There may some blame toward Petr Cech as he seemed to only half heartedly o for the ball, maybe thinking is flying over the bar.

Torres looked lively all game with an extra yard of pace abut him and determination to chase every ball that wasn’t there before. In the final ten minutes his hard work was rewarded as miscommunication between Matija Nastasic and Joe Hart saw the defender head the ball past him and Torres chased to smash it into the back of the net from close range.
