The 3rd round of the Capital One Cup got underway last night and, unlike last season where Bradford The 3rd City somehow made it all the way to the final, there was a distinct lack of shocks.
Despite changing pretty much their entire starting elevens Chelsea, Spurs, and Man City made it through to the next round comfortably. As the likes of Cole, Lampard, and Hazard were rested and did whatever footballers do on a night off – probably get a new tattoo or something, Chelsea won 2-0 away at Swindon as even Fernando Torres got on the score sheet.
Spurs and Man City scored nine goals between them as they beat Villa (4-0) and Wigan (5-0) respectively. Although it could have been a tighter affair at Villa Park had the home side been given a penalty when Jan Vertonghen decided the best course of action when Villa striker Helenius was through on goal was to pull down the Danes shorts. Apparently this is fine in the modern game as the referee waved play on. City’s game was a straightforward affair as their class told against the side that beat them to the FA cup back in May.
In other games of note Sunderland began life after Di Canio with a 2-0 win over Peterborough while in the battle of the brightly coloured yellow shirts Norwich beat Watford 3-2 after extra time. Two Championship teams progressed to the next round with Burnley beating Nottingham Forest 2-1 and Leicester overcoming their East Midland rivals Derby County.
The Hull – Huddersfield game gets the award for worst match of the night. When even the victorious manager (Hull won the game 1-0) describes the contest as “like watching paint dry” you know it hasn’t been a classic.
