Well, it was a tale of two different games for the Lions this Saturday and Tuesday, as a narrow 23-21 victory over Australia and a 35-0 win over Melbourne Rebels showcased a positive week, as they took a 1-0 lead in the series.
The match against Australia was obviously the tougher of the two, and as we previously said, it was Leigh Halfpenny who was the hero as his two conversions and penalties helped the Lions to a narrow victory. Two tries from George North and Alex Cuthbert helped the Lions to a positive result, with two tries from Wing debutant Israel Folau not enough for Australia to fight back, as well as one penalty from James O’Connor and two from Kurtley Beale (which is an awesome name!).
But the friendly in midweek was a completely different game, with the last midweek friendly ending in a demolishing of the Rebels. Sounds like Star Wars doesn’t it? Well it wasn’t much of a battle on the field, as tries from Conor Murray, Sean Maitland and Sean O’Brien helped send them on their way, with further conversions from England whizkid Owen Farrell who got three, and Stuart Hogg and Tom Youngs securing victory.
It was Hogg’s 21st birthday out in Australia yesterday; so happy birthday to the young lad. Hopefully the boozing doesn’t happen until after the series is over; then feel free to go nuts!
