The Gunners have been praised for their start to the season but this was billed as their first real test of their title credentials. Liverpool on the other hand have been credited by some sources with an outside chance of the title but were looking to make a statement that they can finish in the top four.

Liverpool have a poor record at the Emirates but started the game the brighter of the two stroking the ball round nicely and maintaining possession. The little chances to speak of until Bacary Sagna was put through down the right side on a counter attack. He pulled the ball back across the box for Santi Cazorla to head straight into the post. Fortunately for him the ball bounced back straight into his path and half-volleyed into the empty vacated by Simon Mignolet who had dived for the earlier effort.

After taking the lead in the 19th minute, Arsenal went from strength to strength. They controlled the midfield as Liverpool couldn’t cope with their passing and all of a sudden looked out of sorts as Arsenal picked holes in their 3-5-2 formation. Liverpool did offer some response as a quick free-kick from Luis Suarez put Daniel Sturridge through to cross for Jordan Henderson who duly slotted the ball into the net. However, the referee brought play back to book Bacary Sagna for a cynical foul on Suarez much to Brendan Rodgers chagrin.

Into the second half, Rodgers decided to bring on Philippe Coutinho in positive move to fashion more chances. But on 59 minutes, Aaron Ramsey unleashed a half-volley that looped over Mignolet which pretty much sealed the game given the flow of football.

Liverpool were only able to create one more decent chance as Suarez broke through down the left and tried to slot the ball past Wojciech Szczesny but it went wide to the annoyance of Sturridge who wanted it played across the box.

Arsenal ran out 2-0 winners and answered many of their critics who don’t believe in their title credentials but still have many not on their side.
