TO those of us who support clubs in Lincolnshire and have a passing knowledge of the non-league scene in the Nottinghamshire area, he was a legend.
Mention his name to anyone else, however, and it’ll generally be followed by the words ‘who the fuck is Keith Alexander?’
Macclesfield Town manager Alexander died after his side’s recent 1-0 defeat to Notts County.
He was never great as a player, although he did play at international level during his Grimsby Town days. Unfortunately it was for St Lucia so doesn’t really count.
It was as a manager that he really made his mark, though, becoming one of the few black bosses in the UK to forge a lengthy, successful post-playing career in professional football, albeit in the lower divisions.
He became a legend at Lincoln City, where he guided the club from the brink of bankruptcy to the play-offs for four successive seasons. Amazingly, he lost all of them. And for those of you still wondering why England wore black armbands for the match with Egypt, it was in respect for Big Keith. Top man.
