As anyone who’s tasted Ferrero Rocher will know, ambassador receptions are noted for their host’s exquisite taste that captivates and spoils his guests.
Sadly, for lovers of high society and overly-priced-and-excessively-wrapped chocolates, the only thing
he’ll be spoiling now is the coffin liner in which his body is now decomposing. That’s right, folks, Michele Ferrero, the inventor of Ferrero Rocher, died on Valentine’s Day, meaning that his chocolate balls will have a sour tinge for the foreseeable future.
Ferrero, who was also responsible for creating Tic Tacs and Kinder Eggs, developed Ferrero Rocher in 1982. By 1985 they were taking on After Eight Mints and Terry’s Chocolate Orange as the thinking man’s
chocolate of choice. Italian President Sergio Mattarella took time out from riding his scooter and whistling at girls to praise Ferrero as one of the leaders of Italian industry.
“[He was] always ahead of his time thanks to innovative products and his tenacious work and reserved character,” said Mattarella while gesturing flamboyantly and eating a Cornetto.
