China has begun a crack down on children’s cartoon shows deeming them to be too violent and featuring to many offensive words.
CCTV, nope not the ones who watch you in the shower but China’s largest TV network, have released a report on an investigation they conducted into the behaviours of children in China in relation to the escalating amount of violence and bad language in cartoons. They’ve found distinct similarities between actions conducted in the show and bad behaviour between children.
One of the main culprits has been ” Pleasant Goat and Big, Big Wolf” which just screams fluffy, cartoon violence. Pleasant Goat, who is the protagonist, can be thought of as Mickey Mouse on steroids. The Chinese authorities consider his behaviour too aggressive.
The episode to episode content of the show revolves around Pleasant and his fellow goats attempting to outsmart Big, Big Wolf and escape from his clutches. Nothing too traumatising in that but the Chinese authorities have recorded that Big, Big Wolf had been hit with a frying pan over 9,000 times since the show commenced and hero Pleasant Goat has suffered being boiled alive 839 times himself and received shock therapy more than 1,700 times.
Pleasant Goat creator Weiming Huang has insisted the overall theme of the show is a positive one to show ‘good triumphs over evil’.
Although it does sound like something out of the film Hostel, much worse can be found in the western world as Tom and Jerry’s antics have shown as decades ago. Even on YouTube, ‘Happy Tree Friends’ incorporated, by my calculations, a shitload of gore and violence.
