In what is becoming an increasingly predictable routine, Manchester City were well beaten at home last night in a Champions League game; this time against Bayern Munich.
Granted Munich are the reigning champions and have lost just two of their last fifty-two competitive games but City were never in the running.
Frank Ribery scored in just the 7th minute with a long range strike which Joe Hart will be disappointed not to have kept out and it only got worse from there. Ribery himself had lost his passport just 24 hours before travelling to Manchester and Micah Richards must have been cursing the ever-efficient Germans for resolving the situation so quickly as he was given a torrid time by the Frenchman all night. It wasn’t any easier for the other City players and the rest of the first half consisted of blue shirts chasing Bayern players around the pitch like a dog chasing a tennis ball; a lot of enthusiasm but just not quite quick enough to catch it.
It was more of the same after the break and despite the 60,000 screaming supporters surrounding them, City seemed to be convinced they were involved in some sort of possession training session and allowed Bayern to dominate once again. Thomas Muller made it 2-0 as he coolly rounded Hart before the England Number 1 was easily beaten at his near post by the ever-balding Robben. The increasingly erratic performances of Hart will be a worry not only for Pellegrini but also for England supporters fearful of who could replace him in goal for the national side.
Spanish striker Negrado came on for the home side and scored a well-taken curling shot late on but after demolishing Man Utd on the same pitch just 10 days ago this resounding defeat adds weight to the theory that City cannot handle the big European occasions and is a sign that “zee Germans” are becoming the dominant force in Europe once again.
