We all know England fans are a level-headed bunch who never, ever get carried away when it comes to expectations at major international tournaments.

But when England won the Under-20s World Cup this month with a 1-0 victory over traditional footballing powerhouse Venezuela (!?!), it was only natural and right that the British press immediately proclaimed that England were dead-certs to win the real World Cup in 2022. And if not that one, then definitely in 2026.

“There are no guarantees,” guaranteed coach Paul Simpson. “But if we can just get a real core of them through. If we can keep them involved in first-team football then the future is really bright. That is what everyone inside the walls at the FA are keeping their fingers crossed for.”
