“Flash! Ah-ah! Saviour of the universe!” Classic Queen from one of the campest sci-fi films ever made, Flash Gordon – the tale of the Aryan race American football star who befriends Brian Blessed and Timothy Dalton before saving the galaxy.
Well now we have a real-life equivalent to Flash – Vince Wilfork of the New England Patriots. Ok, he didn’t save the world from Ming the Merciless, and he’s certainly not a Hitler Youth poster boy, but he has played in the Super Bowl and he also pulled a woman from a burning car – all in the space of a couple of weeks.
Wilfork was on his way back from a big night out just after the Patriots had booked their place in the Super Bowl when he came across a car wreck in Foxborough, near the Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts that had witnessed his side’s 45-7 win over the Indianopolis Colts.
Wilfork immediately reached into the vehicle to pull 38-year-old Mary Ellen Brooks from the wreckage of her 4×4. “It wasn’t a big deal… it’s just seeing somebody that needs help. I helped them,” he shrugged before jumping into a burning building to save a litter of puppies.
