The debacle that is the summer transfer window finally came to a close on the last day in August, with the Premier League already nearly 3 games in.
Manchester City, as predicted were the biggest movers on the final day, signing 5 players in total, with Nigel de Jong leaving for AC Milan. Benfica’s Javi Garcia at £16 million was the most expensive deal completed overall. Maicon from Inter, winger Scott Sinclair from Swansea and 19-year-old centre half Matija Nastasic also arrived for a total spend of £38 million. Goalkeeper Richard Wright was also brought in, surely the least expected transfer of the day!
Tottenham were also as busy as ever. After Rafa van der Vaart had been offloaded back to Hamburg for £10 million, the arrival of Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was confirmed, but another big shock was the final hour capture of Clint Dempsey for just £6 million. Liverpool, favorites to sign the American were left disappointed as the club finally loaned out Andy Carroll to West Ham and had earlier raised another £4 million from the sale of Charlie Adam to Stoke.
In other transfers, QPR signed Stephane Mbia from Marseille, their 12th signing in the window, with bad boy Joey Barton going in the opposite direction. Arsenal loaned out Nicklas Bendtner to Juventus, and Fulham replaced Dempsey with Dimitar Berbatov for just £4 million.
