Stop the press. The next step in evolution could just have been discovered in rural Texas.
A sixty-one year old man has the ability to get drunk without ever drinking a drop of alcohol.
While this may sound like a great money-saving technique for drinkers everywhere, this old timer didn’t exactly see it that way after being accused by his wife of being a secret alcoholic and harassed by others for turning up to church drunk.
The couple decided to seek a medical explanation for the strange events after another period of unexplainable dizziness but doctors initially rejected his claims as just a cover up for his antics (who can blame them really).
It was only after a blood test after another visit to hospital that it was discovered his blood alcohol level was five times higher than the legal driving limit in Texas despite him not having consumed any drinks!
Now for the scientific part. Apparently the man has too much “brewer’s yeast” in his stomach. This leads to the infection Saccharomyces or “auto-brewery syndrome” to you and me. Basically every time he ate any starchy food his body effectively took it and began brewing beer in his own stomach.
This must surely be the world’s smallest micro-brewery.
So next time you are at the bar why not try ordering some pasta or a loaf of bread instead of a beer and see if it does the job. But don’t hold your breath; this is one of very few recorded cases of auto-brewery syndrome…unfortunately!
