The UK’s Worst TV Adverts, television ads, Plenty More Fish, Go Compare, Cillit Bang, Barry Scott, Yop, Frosties, Frosties kid, they're gonna taste greatThere are certain ads that leave you literally scratching your head, exclaiming “wtf?!” To think that ad execs sat around a table and were all in agreement that a particular advert fell under the category of ‘a good idea’ will never cease to amaze us. And the UK seem to have a particular…err, knack for coming up with some spectacularly awful ones:

Like this recent one, for example, for Plenty More Fish, a very dubious looking dating site. Honest to God, this advert is next level creepy. They’ve taken creep levels to entirely new and bizarre heights. Not only do the animations not look even remotely human, but why are there cyborg lesbians in white suits following that poor ‘woman’ around? She’s dressed in a crop top and short-shorts in England, her woes are bad enough. One YouTuber’s comment: ‘this is the worst advert I have ever seen. I feel sick’ – we feel ya, buddy.

With GoCompare.com – and ‘Gio Compario’ – we really had our pick of ‘which one makes us wanna gouge our eyes out the most’. But their extraordinarily fat, faux-opera (fauxpera?) singing tosspot combined with autotune makes for a good 40secs of ear bleeding. The lady’s face at 0:28 sums up our distress perfectly.

They may have tasted great, but you were bloody annoying, kid. The 2006 Frosties ad was apparently so offensive, it led to the actor receiving numerous death threats (none from us, Your Honour, we swear!). He didn’t commit suicide – as many rumours at the time suggested – but is alive and well, and is ‘carving out a career as a gymnast’. No, seriously.

This Yop ad received quite a few complaints and disappeared almost as soon as it besmirched our screens. But what’s so upsetting about this ad? The jingle is a version of Eddy Grant’s song ‘Gimme Hope Jo’anna’, which was a great choice as it’s so memorable. Hmm…maybe it’s the fact that Eddy is a black Reggae artist and they saw fit to give all the teens in the ad overly large lips? Naah, probably not.

WHY ARE YOU YELLING, BARRY SCOTT? HAVE WE DONE SOMETHING WRONG? WHY ARE YOU YELLING AT US? We had to turn down the volume whenever Bell-end Barry popped up on TV, just so we could retain some of our hearing. Apparently, some Cillit Bang was used on ol’ Baz as he’s no longer their shouty spokesman these days. ‘BANG AND THE DIRT IS GONE’ indeed.
