Anyone remember classic 80s comedy ‘Brewster’s Millions’ starring Richard Pryor, where he has to spend millions in a short space of time in order to inherit billions? Leeds United did something similar a few years ago, only it was called Ridsdale’s Millions and the only thing they inherited was a mountain of debt. If anything, it was funnier than the film.
Well it seems new Leeds boss Brian McDermott is bringing back those halcyon days after dishing out his own money to fans who came to see the club take on a local Slovenian team as part of a pre-season tour.
After the 3-1 victory, the small band of loyal Leeds fans chanted “Oh Brian, it’s your round”, and the bespectacled Uncle Fester-alike duly obliged by handing over 50 Euros as he passed by the stands.
Seeing as the average price of a pint in Slovenia in $2, that should leave them tanked up for the best part of the weekend – although seeing as they’re Yorkshiremen there’s an equally good chance they went straight to the bank with it.
“Fifty Euros was all I came out with,” McDermott said. “I’d have given them more if I’d had it. I feel a bit bad actually.”
The Leeds fans didn’t seem to mind though, with some of them going on Twitter later that evening to post pictures of the empty beer bottles McDermott had paid for. And with a potential free hand-out at every game, expect attendances at Elland Road to go through the roof this year. Smart move Brian.
