students cook with coolioStudents from the University of Central Lancaster were in their own personal ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ recently, when 90’s rap sensation Coolio decided to swing by their flat in Preston and whip up a feast, with an acoustic recording of his number one hit for dessert!

Throwing in his bandana and microphone for a chef hat and whisk, Coolio has recently turned his hand to culinary and is apparently planning to follow up his 2009 ‘Cooking with Coolio’ book with his next addition in the near future.

It seems he wanted to show off these skills too, as the 50-year-old rapper (whose real name is Artis Leon Ivey Jr) followed a performance at Preston’s ‘Ships and Giggles’ with a trip to Tesco to source the ingredients for his recipe with his newly-acquired student chums.

Lorcan O’Mahony, the guitarist featured in the video, revealed on Reddit: “He was playing a gig in our city, and a few of my housemates were in the VIP after party. He came back to our house afterwards, and told us that he wasn’t busy that night so would come over and cook us dinner”.

He continued with, “We had Coolio’s Caprese Salad, Chicken á la Daaaamn, and Peach Crumble. We also videoed a cooking show, ‘Cookin’ with Coolio’. It was just as weird as it sounds.”

The original version of the rapper’s hit ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ is one of the most successful Hip-Hop songs and best-selling singles of all time, so it’s no surprise this new version of the song now has almost one million hits on YouTube.

Commenting on his eventful stay up north, Coolio commented: “I’m really having a good time – I’ll definitely come back to Preston. The people of Preston are cool.”
