Australian SoccerHearty congratulations all round for Western Sydney Wanderers. BBM might come across as quite cynical at times, in fact we’ve been described as ‘a deeply disturbed individual’ by more than one police profiler, but the Wanderers rise to prominence in the A-League has been a fairytale success story, and here at BBM Towers we believe in giving credit where it’s due. Unfortunately, “credit where it’s due” is an unfamiliar concept to Football Federation Australia who think winning the league is no great shakes and therefore put all the attention on their end of season cup competition which makes a mockery of the traditions of football.

Yes the grand final is approaching people, and while the rest of the footballing world knows that the true champions this year are the ones who finished top of the league, the FFA in its infinite wisdom has come up with a much better way to decide which club is best. Because as we all know, giving the league title to the team with most points is far too complicated. So instead, the A League has come up with a much simpler system. Basically, the teams that finish third and fourth play the teams that finish fifth and sixth respectively in the elimination finals.

The highest-ranked winner (the team that finished higher in the league) of those games then plays the teams that finished first, and the lowest-ranked winner plays the team that finished top. The winner of those games then face each other in the grand final. See, it’s so simple it’s child’s play – which ironically is also a pretty accurate description of the standard of the A-League.
