Sore throat? Runny nose? Struggling to breathe? They’re pretty common symptoms for a common ailment. But in the case of a seven-year-old girl in China, it proved to be a slightly more baffling (and disgusting) diagnosis than your common cold. Turns out she had a live leech stuck in her windpipe. Lovely. It’ll certainly make you think twice the next time someone asks if you’ve got a frog in your throat.
“We thought she might have caught a cold, but never thought it was a leech or that it could stay there so long,” the unnamed girl’s mother said.
Doctors added the five-centimetre leech had probably grown in size while it was in the youngster’s throat after feasting on her blood.
