For most people, prom night conjures up images of innocent girls wearing big sparkly dresses, and gangly boys awkwardly smiling by a limo wearing ‘dapper’ suits. The night starts with a bucks fizz, and is spent in true school disco style with boys avoiding girls, ending with a throwback track from the 90’s and a cheeky drink in a park.
Apparently, times have changed. A school in America has made its students sign a contract, which promises that won’t dance sexually at prom. Dancing? Sexually? That’s blown the innocence right out the park. It seems twerking and grinding has become the ‘done’ thing for sixteen year olds, so whilst we’ve all been blasting Miley, teens everywhere have been embracing her moves.
Annapolis High School in Maryland refused its pupils entry to prom unless both they and their parents had signed the contract. We’d love to explain that one to our parents, along with relevant dance moves.
It’s not clear how these rules would be enforced on the night, take Beyonce’s bootylicious for example, this is arguably a song that calls for some booty shaking, but at what point does this cross the line from a fun, erm, jiggle…to an unacceptably sexual move? Interesting one for philosophers that.
What’s most surprising is that this ban isn’t solely about retaining some boundaries of respect, but rather it’s because ‘some kids feel left out because of the dancing that occurs.’ Oh, right…a bit like how we felt when we were pushed out the konga line at our prom then.
