It was clearly a load of made-up crap in the first place, but that didn’t stop every paper back in England running with the hilarious story of WWE chief Vince McMahon being interested in taking over Newcastle United.
There are few people who wouldn’t like to see Mike Ashley hit over the head with a steel chair while Alan Pardew distracts the referee, but when a story is “broken” by a website called winnersports.co.uk (which puts the word FC or AFC after every frigging club name it mentions), you know it’s as fake as, well, American wrestling.
“Vince McMahon has been sniffing around the club and seems keen on pursuing his interest,” a ‘Newcastle source’ told the website. “He sees England as an untapped market for his wrestling empire. He has even indicated he could put on wrestling bouts at St James’s Park. Obviously it is very early days but there is hope the fans may get what they want with Ashley leaving. Buying a club like Newcastle would throw him into the spotlight in England which is just what he is looking to do.”
Considering the only “Newcastle sauce” we know is Brown Ale, we were never really convinced of the story’s authenticity.
And lo and behold, the club smacked down the hilarity a day later by announcing there was no truth to the rumours. By that stage, however, the fans had already had their fun. A Premier League Royal Rumble appeared to be the firm favourite among supporters (where the Ameobi brothers would obviously see their allegiance fall apart to start a feud the likes of which has never been seen) while a WWE All-Star XI is also a strongly-back idea to take on the best the English top-flight has to offer.
