As if to underline just how shit Liverpool’s strikeforce is without Daniel Sturridge, Jurgen Klopp opted to play one of his reserve keepers up front for a pre-season friendly. Poor old Mario Balotelli.
Young shotstopper Shamal George has gained something of a cult following ever since his boss thought it would be a good idea to play him as a striker during a game against Huddersfield. Apparently the Reds had used up all their outfield substitutes at half-time when Lucas limped off the field in the second half. Rather than play with 10 men, Klopp threw the 19-year-old keeper into the forward line.
Klopp explained himself at full-time, telling Liverpool’s website: “They told me from the bench after I’d organised the system with 10 and said, ‘Come on, we have Shamal!’”
The idea of playing a keeper up front may sound stupid, but just remember how many goals Joe Hart helped create at Euro 2016.
