Remember when England were just good enough for fans to be able to blame referees, or even one player, for defeats at major tournaments? Whether it was David Beckham limply flicking his leg at Diego Simeone in 1998, or the referee failing to spot the most blatant handball of all time in 1986, there was always a general feeling of “we wuz robbed” by just one moment of madness.
Sadly, we no longer have that luxury as the whole team is so shit that the highlight of the last World Cup was when everyone thought Raheem Sterling had scored early against Italy – only to discover he’d hit the side-netting.
It was downhill fast after that. But while England’s standards have plummeted, it seems Colombia’s recent resurgence has lifted them to the “we would have won if” level – with the news that one South American lawyer is so convinced his team were unfairly treated at the World Cup that he’s suing FIFA for $800million because of the stress it caused him. Aurelio Jimenez, a leading legal expert, says he was taken to hospital with cardiac problems after Brazil’s controversial win over Colombia in July. He says he was left “distressed” because referee Carlos Velasco Carballo failed to give Colombia enough of the decisions, and he wants cash as compensation.
The 74-year-old told the BBC he has “serious evidence of wrongdoings” and is already working on gathering witnesses. “FIFA’s referees caused big moral damages and distress,” Jimenez whined. “There were many wrongdoings related to referees who damaged many countries, among them the Colombia team. “I was heartbroken, my cardiac rhythm was altered and my relatives were crying after taking me to the emergency room.”
