Bang, crash, wallop! That was the sound of Chelsea on New Year’s Day as they were Harry Kaned by Tottenham at White Hart Lane. It all started so well for the Blues when Diego Costa scored to give them the lead but what was to happen was a real wake up for the so called special one.
Not only did the Chelsea back four look like they were still recovery from stuffing themselves with turkey throughout the festive period but were bemused and torn to pieces by a three goal blitz in the first half. Thanks to Nacer Chadli, Harry Kane and Andros Townsend. At one point, it could have been forgiven for being a PlayStation match when it soon became 4-1 to Spurs in the second half. Not even a bit of magic from twinkle toes Eden Hazard and the head strong John Terry could not save Jose Mourinho from a 5-3 defeat.
Jose often wonders if there is a conspiracy against his side diving well on this performance it was more a case of his players being afraid to work as they were run ragged by Tottenham’s attacking line up. Too many Christmas parties do take their toll.
It was an absolute humdinger of a game at the Etihad Stadium as well where those moneybags Manchester City and those more modest people Sunderland played in a 3-2 win for the home side. Despite it being goalless at half time the game soon took off as Yaya Toure unleased a bullet of a shot that smashed in to the net to give city the lead. Certainly one way to shake off that hangover from those New Year celebrations. However, not entirely from a City perspective as they blew a two goal lead again after Stevan Jovetic had put them two up, when ex- boyfriends and former players Adam Johnson and Jack Rodwell drew Sunderland level. Luckily enough you can always talk to Frank and it was that man who rescued City and grabbed them the vital winner leaving City and Chelsea level on 46 points and similar goal difference at the top.
Lastly, are the Gunners now goners after losing 2-0 to the Saints at St Mary Stadium and slipping 3 points behind the Saints in fourth. Arsene Wenger may think so after his side dismal performance and Ronald Koeman won’t mind one bit. Certainly Wojciech Szczesny did his best to give Southampton a helping hand after the goalkeeper gifted goals to Sadio Mane and Dusan Tadic. At the end, a fan confronted Wenger on the touchline but it may have made more sense for him to have given the Arsenal goalkeeper a kicking.
