anti-rape-underwearTaking matters of sexual violence into their own hands, three students from Sri Ramaswamy Memorial University in Chennai, India, have created SHE (Society Harnessing Equipment).

What’s that? We hear you ask! It’s an ‘anti-rape’ undergarment designed by students Manisha Mohan, Rimpi Tripathi and Neeladri Basu Pal to protect women from being raped or molested. And how does it do it? It sends a high voltage shock as soon as pressure sensors are activated as well sending as an SMS to emergency number 100 and to the victim’s parents.

Creator Ms. Mohan explained, “the lingerie, laced with modules of global positioning system (GPS), global system for mobile communications (GSM) and also pressure sensors, is capable of sending shock waves of 3,800 kV, as well as alerts to the girl’s parents and [the] police.”

SHE has since been nominated for the Gandhian Young Technological Innovation Award 2013 and will be available for purchase from April 2014.
