Robin HoodImagine if Robin Hood had spent most of his time off his tits on weed instead of swinging through trees in tights. Merry men indeed, although we’re not sure he would have been arsed stealing gold from King John. More likely he would have just robbed the medieval equivalent of pizza delivery boys.

Well a couple in their sixties in Lincolnshire (not too far away from Sherwood Forest as it happens) took the whole “rob from the rich, give to the poor” motto to new “highs” in recent years after earning a small fortune from growing cannabis and using the profits to help locals in the Kenyan village where they were regular visitors.

Michael Foster, 62, and Susan Cooper, 63, pocketed hundreds of thousands of pounds during the sophisticated six year operation – but used much of their ill-gotten money to pay for life-saving surgery, computers for a local eye hospital and schooling for poor children.

The do-gooding pair were only caught when a police officer chasing a burglar near the couple’s picturesque home recognised that distinctive weed smell coming from the property. Inside police found 159 cannabis plants with an estimated street value of around £20,000. Two of the buildings had been converted into a growing room and drying room. Officers also recovered £20,000 in £1,000 bundles from a carrier bag.

Prosecutor Jon Dee told Lincoln Crown Court: “It perhaps can be best summed up by Mr Foster who told police in his own words during his interview that this started off as a hobby and turned into a business. For six years they produced cannabis in significant quantities.”

Naturally, the fact that weed is a harmless drug and that they’d been using the money to create a better world for mankind was ignored by the judge and they were both jailed for three years.
