Most football fans enjoy a friendly bet with a rival supporter when their teams face each other. In most cases, it’s a harmless wager like a pint, a meal or a naked photo of your ex-wife taken while she was asleep (which is something Ashley Cole still refuses to cough up to BBM, despite clearly accepting the bet when he deleted our post and reported us to Twitter). But two blokes in Uganda took things a tad too far last month when they bet on the outcome of the Manchester United v Arsenalgame at Old Trafford.
Gunners fanatic Henry Dhabasani literally bet his house on Arsenal, while United tragic Rashid Yiga staked his new car and his wife on David Moyes’ men. After Robin van Persie’s first half header, which sealed a 1-0 win for United, Dhabasani is now homeless. And, frankly, we wouldn’t be surprised if Yiga lost his wife anyway after she found it she was a bet on a football match. Apparently, football fans in Africa take their bets very seriously; infact Dhabasani and Yiga were so serious that the two men put down the stake in writing with local leaders and fellow fans, who were drafted in as witnesses.
The Ugandan Observer reports that Dhabasani, who has three wives and five children, fainted at the end of the match as the consequences of his folly sank in. He was evicted on Monday after several United fans stormed his home and threw him and his family out. Now he knows how BBM felt when Cheryl Cole found out we’d been hiding in her attic for five weeks.
