It’s almost 25th December, a day when the Christian world comes together to celebrate the birth of an inspirational figure capable of “unbelievable” things. That’s right, Chris Kamara turns 56 this month – and the parallels with our Lord Jesus Christ – who died for all our sins, amen – don’t end with a shared birthday. Firstly, despite the fact he should be crucified for being the most incompetent Sky commentator of all time, Kamara always “rises again” at the weekend and his words give joy to millions – mainly the phrase “unbelievable Jeff!”
Secondly, they both used to manage football teams called Bradford City – Bradford being the ancient Hebrew word for Bethlehem, who Jesus guided to a Judea Challenge Cup victory in 27AD thanks to a late winner by a then-young Alessandro Del Piero. And thirdly, they’ve both made the ultimate sacrifice for the good of mankind. In Jesus’ case, he died on the cross to cleanse mankind of all its sins. In Kamara’s case, he’s shaved off his trademark moustache to raise awareness of men’s health issues.
And just like the cross, Kamara’s moustache is set to become a symbol of all that’s good in the world, as it’s been preserved as a cast by Gillette. “Whilst it was an unbelievably heartbreaking experience to see my mo disappear from my upper lip, I live safe in the knowledge that it has received the recognition it deserves,” said Kamara, possibly while he was supposed to be reporting on a goal at Fratton Park. “All I ask is that the new owner looks after my dear old mo and keeps me up to date on how my mo’s faring from time to time.”
