George of the jungle is real! In 1971 Ho Van Thanh lost his wife and two of his children to a mine blast during the Vietnam War. He made the decision to escape into the jungle in order to get away from the destruction of the war, taking his only remaining son, who was a baby at the time, Ho Van Lang.
To be on the safe side, they remained in the jungle living in a wooden tree house, wearing loincloths, and finding their food in the wild, until long after the war was over. 40 years after in fact!
They were rescued by locals who were collecting firewood in the Tay Tra District in Quang Ngai Province. The father, who is now 82, was too weak to even walk and was on the brink of death, and his now 41-year-old son can barely speak the local language.
The pair were secluded from the modern day world for so long, it will be a challenge for them to pick up a new routine that doesn’t involve wearing next to nothing in public and eating a diet of fruit and berries.
You never know they might prefer the jungle lifestyle!
