For those of us not inspired to become world class athletes, but who still understand the importance of living an active life, there lies a happy place we can all gather dressed in slightly overoptimistic lycra: a fun run. Always a pleasure, these events are all about the fun of taking part, a judgement free zone.
Something that certainly won’t have been a pleasure for 14 year old Nidaa Abbasi, is accidentally veering off the casual mini-marathon course she was running in Nottingham, and unwittingly joining the competitive ranks of hardcore exercise enthusiasts of a half marathon.
It was only on spotting a sign declaring she’d reached four miles, that Nidaa suddenly realised her supposed one-and-a-half miles of jubilant endorphin releasing fun had taken a different turn altogether. The car leading the mini-marathon had stalled, creating confusion about who went where.
‘I decided to carry on, it was OK. By the end I was getting tired and I walked a bit. It was fun.’ Said Nidaa. Very admirable. You wouldn’t catch us simply soldiering on in our oversized chicken costume.
The teenager completed the entire 13-mile distance in just three hours. She added ‘I got to finish with my mum and dad who were taking part in the half marathon so it was nice to have photos together.’ That’s a photo for the mantelpiece no doubt, beats the ones of our families all gazing proudly at the youngest brandishing their bronze medal for egg and spoon. In a chicken costume, naturally.
