Downing Street was really trying to think outside the box back in 2011, when they recruited a slightly unusual employee to get rid of their mouse problem. Larry the cat was welcomed into number 10 from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, after being described as a “good ratter” by a Downing Street spokesperson.
But new reports have revealed that David Cameron hasn’t taken too kindly to Larry, who apparently is not pulling his weight around the house. The allegation comes from a new book by Evening Standard columnist Matthew d’Ancona, ‘In It Together: The Inside Story of the Coalition Government’, where he claims that the poor rescue cat is “unloved”. Poor Larry.
It gets even worse when we see what a good heart Larry has, too. His Twitter page clearly displays his good nature and charitable tendencies, through various retweets promoting serious issues such as cat-diabetes and cat-adoption.
This elusive Downing Street spokesperson has jumped to the Camerons’ defence, however, saying that the claim is ‘totally untrue. He is very popular with everyone in the building and we all get on purr-fectly well.’ We appreciate the tactics there, using a pun to try and make light of such a serious and abominable situation, but it’s not going to wash with us.
We can see right through you, David. We know you’re a dog person at heart.
