As a British expat living in Australia, BBM has seen a fair few duty-free shops in airports during our travels. But from Amsterdam to Abu Dhabi, they all have one thing in common – giant, limb-sized Toblerone bars.
Yet sadly, this baffling global brotherhood of triangular treats could now be a thing of the past due to the actions of a faux-terrorist on a flight from the Dutch capital to Hong Kong.
Antti Oskari Manselius, from Finland, wrapped two economy class blankets around his head, wearing a third as a cape, while he waved the chocolate bar “like a sword” as he walked towards the cockpit.
Now we all know that chocolate is bad for your health but we don’t think that qualifies it as a lethal weapon.
The 23-year-old also made a false bomb threat on the Cathay Pacific flight, and said he was robbing the plane, airplane staff said.
“He said, ‘I am robbing the plane now. I want to see the Olympics in Sochi and I need to get off the plane now,” attendant Leung Hiu-lun was quoted as telling the court. “He was furious. He made me feel like he was trying to endanger the aircraft.”
Manselius pleaded not guilty to disorderly conduct and giving false information about a bomb when he appeared in court last month.
He said he was trying to entertain the other passengers and was making “fun and jokes”.
Because as we all know, flight security staff just love fun and jokes when it comes to making terrorist threats. As BBM discovered to our cost, you can’t even try to pull sexy check-in staff with a few one-liners without it resulting in an instant cavity search. Ironically, BBM’s anus was so stretched during the incident, you probably could smuggle narcotics up it now.
