A Chinese doctor has grafted a nose out of the rib cartilage of a 22-year old patient. The plan is to copy and paste the newly grown nose into the place of the original which was damaged severely after an accident towards the end of 2012.
The nose took nine months to cultivate which is a genius procedure but has been balanced out by the odd choice of position, his forehead. There were the options of his back, groin, elbow, foot, forearm where it has been done before, pretty much anywhere but the forehead would have carried less social stigma.
Unfortunately for the patient every person he now meets will think “My God, this guy has no nose. Wait there it is, growing out of your forehead!”
Surgeon Guo Zhihui was quoted as saying “We were just interested in helping the man and did not expect it would cause this much attention”
Fortunately, this is only for a temporary period and the new nose will be grafted into position of the old one through surgery.
Alexander Seifalian, a professor of nanotechnology and regenerative medicine reassures us that the choice was logical given the forehead has the same “structure and texture” but insists that the nose could have been done straight into the position of the damaged area as cartilage from the body was used.
According to Guo, the possibility had to be ruled out as the area became infected as the patient couldn’t afford surgery at first.
