It’s fair to say it’s been a fantastic year for Manchester United. Admittedly, we stopped looking at their results after they beat Swansea 4-1 on the opening day of the season, but we can only assume they’ve gone from strength to strength since then under that canny Scotsman, David Moyes.
Sir Alex who? We reckon United must have the title about sewn up by now, which is why we were shocked to hear that bookmakers Betfred have announced they will refund all bets placed on Moyes’ side retaining their Premier League title this season. The reason? Apparently United are “useless” and it wouldn’t be fair to take money off their fans.
Fair enough, although “being useless” has never stopped bookies offering odds on England to win a major tournament.
“These loyal fans never had a chance of winning with United,” said co-founder Fred Done after United were walloped 3-0 by Liverpool at Old Trafford. “This season the Reds have been useless, hopeless and meaningless.”
It’s a generous gesture set to cost the bookies, which originated in Salford, about £200,000. It would have been more, but most United fans live at least 150 miles away from Salford.
“One of the reasons I’m doing this, and becoming the first bookmaker ever to do so, is because of the way the fans were still singing for their team even though we were losing 3-0 to Liverpool,” Done whined. “I couldn’t believe it and they deserve a team much better than that put out by David Moyes.”
We were surprised by the news too. United fans singing at Old Trafford? Pull the other one. Or at least hand us a prawn sandwich.
