The two fastest goals of the season were both scored in this midweek cluster of games held under the floodlights around the country.
Theo Walcott scored after 51 seconds for Arsenal against Everton but yet again another goal from powerhouse Fellaini sealed a share of the points in a high quality affair. But Robin van Persie eclipsed his former side yet again as his deflected effort sneaked into the West Ham goal after just 32 seconds! The Dutchman continued his impressive tally of goals since doing a runner from an almost trophyless time at Arsenal, and this decision is beginning to look more and more justified after his 10th goal of the campaign gave United all 3 points yet again.
Stoke piled the pressure on under fire Newcastle boss Alan Pardew last night. The Toons hopes of ending their winless run crashed at fortress Britannia as they lost for the fourth successive game. Papiss Cisse had put them ahead with a 48th minute strike but Jonathon Walters equalised after 81mins and Jerome grabbed the winner four minutes later. Suddenly the recent 8-year contract awarded to Pardew looks like a poison chalice for the club!
Highflying West Brom’s bid for a place in Europe was hit at Swansea as a Wayne Routledge double and a goal from Spanish sensation Michu sealed an impressive 3-1 win.
Man City kept up pace with United as securing a routine win away at Wigan. A rare goal from serial offender and wind up merchant Mario Balotelli along with a wonder strike by James Milner sealed the spoils. This meant Chelsea really had to win too in the west London derby against Fulham. However Rafa Benitez must be wondering what the hell he has let himself in for as another 0-0 bore draw in the space of three days and an absolute massacre from the Chelsea fans yet again and you could be forgiven for thinking that his time could be up before it has even really began. Watch this space!
In other games, Spurs beat Liverpool 2-1 and Southampton made it seven points from the last nine with a draw against Norwich. QPR STILL cannot win although the appointment of wheeler-dealer cockney geezer might have something to say about this in the future! Aston Villa just kept their necks out of relegation trouble with a 1-0 home win over Reading.
