It’s tough enough being an Everton fan at the best of times (because usually it means you’re a Scouser whose only interests outside football are stealing hub caps and buying shell suits with dole money).
But one Toffees fan has had it particularly tough for 30 years – and not just because his name is Richard Wee.
“Dick” Wee, as we’ve decided to call him, lives in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and has never been to a live game at Goodison. Normally an excuse not to watch Everton would be a positive thing – but last month Dicky decided to make the 7000-mile round trip to watch his beloved Toffees in action against Crystal Palace.
And he was clearly buzzing about the prospect of watching Roberto Martinez’s men in action, as he got into Goodison nice and early to soak up the atmosphere, before posting a picture of himself at the ground.
“Finally, 30 years since supporting @Everton, will b watching EFC ‘live’ for 1st time,” he tweeted.
Sadly, that’s when God himself intervened. With storms lashing Britain at the time, and with Dicky making his way to his seat, news filtered through that the match with Palace had been called off due to ‘building damage’ caused by the freak weather.
“Sadly @Everton v Palace match called off due to bad weather. Dream to watch EFC play will continue to be on hold,” tweeted a forlorn Dicky, using surprisingly few expletives.
But it wasn’t all bad news for the luckless Toffees traveller. One of the clubs PR whizzes picked up the story and arranged for him to meet the players at the team’s hotel.
“Today Everton just prove again that it’s the People’s Club taking extra effort to connect with fans. Salute the people running the club,” tweeted Dicky.
Fair play to Everton, but we’ve been a fan of Cheryl Cole’s tits for years and we’ve never once glimpsed her goodies – despite hiding in a bush outside her bathroom window for nights on end. Come on Cheryl, take a tip from Everton and give us a guided tour of your bangers.
