Calling all fatties, get your giant ass on the first flight to Dubai (you’ll need to book two seats chubby) because the Gulf Emirate is paying its residents gold to lose weight. That’s right, there’s gold in them there massive flaps of skin – and it’s not just a wrapper from a Galaxy bar that got lodged in your man boobs.
For every kilogram dropped by August 16, contestants who registered can waddle away with a gram of gold, currently worth about $42, Dubai’s civic authority announced as part of its ‘Your Weight in Gold’ initiative.
We can almost hear hordes of Americans rubbing their sausage-fingered hands together in greasy glee. “Break out the sausages baby, we’re fry-panning for gold! Those clogged arteries are rivers of cash!”
The top three fatties can win gold coins worth up to 20,000 dirhams ($5400).
“Participants must have excess weight to reduce and stay away from unhealthy methods to lose weight and should be present on the final day to measure weight,” Dubai Municipality said in a press release.
Health officials in Dubai, the commercial hub of the United Arab Emirates, and in neighbouring Gulf nations, are spending millions to control obesity among their citizens. Five of the 10 countries where diabetes is most prevalent are in the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), an umbrella organisation of more than 200 national associations.
The US tried something similar a few years ago, but the winners were all paid in McDonalds vouchers and died of heart problems a few weeks later.
