An ambulance driver in County Durham has become the latest victim claimed by Hurricane Katia in the UK. The un-named ambulance volunteer was killed and his passenger badly injured when a tree fell crushing their vehicle.
Also in the North East, cars were crushed when the roof of a building on Littleburn Industrial Estate at Langley Moor collapsed due to the blasts of winds. Rail services have been hindered and many houses in the North of England are without power due to Hurricane Katia.
The Met Office have issued an amber warning covering several areas, meaning the public should be prepared for the risk of transport disruption and the possibility of damage to trees and structures and down in beach-bum Cornwall they are urging surfers and body boarders to steer well clear of the sea.
BBC weather forecaster Laura Tobin said: “We have some very stormy weather outside… courtesy of a deep area of low pressure. It is the remnants of Hurricane Katia. We could have gusts of wind up to 70mph (113km/h), maybe even 80mph around exposed headlands, coasts and hills.”
Scotland is under threat of localised flooding due to heavy rain that is expected to last for a few days.
We have one clear message for Hurricane Katia…Do one shlaaag!
