RSPCA act inspectors were recently informed about a monster size woolly creature near Canberra after tips from the public who had caught sight of the cloud like enigma.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals sent out some officers to capture and tame the beast. However, what they found was definitely not a scary sight, and instead was sadly a lonely stray sheep, desperately in need for some TLC and a serious haircut. The RSPC believes that the sheep, who they named Chris, escaped from a farm five years ago and hasn’t been sheared since.
Chris, ball shaped and engulfed in a huge coat of wool, was rescued on the 2nd of September, after days of searching. Taking five staff members to guide Chris to safety, it was certainly a struggle. The poor fella needed an immense amount of grooming, assistance walking and help through the paddock doors. The sheer (no pun intended) size of him had made Chris very rigid and frantic. It was obvious that he had been away from his herd and human contact for a few years as his merino wool had grown to an incredible mass.
A risky business, veterinarians were also unsure if he could live through the shearing ordeal as he was clearly stressed and could die easily of shock. Amazingly, a whopping 40.45 kilograms of wool was taken from the Chris (a world record), who is now recovering from all his weight loss.
Chris remains under observation as vets still have a few health concerns, however he’s set to be available for adoption soon! Chris has been saved and although has a traumatic experience, is looking like a new sheep, with a much better haircut, and a world record under his coat.
If you were inspired by Chris’ story, please think about donating. It takes an awful lot of resources to care for him and the other 7000 animals at RSPCA ACT each year.
